Rivers of Soomaa

Rivers flowing through Soomaa National Park play a major role in shaping the local
landscapes. When rainwater or meltwater runs off Sakala Upland, the rivers in Soomaa,
which flow on flat terrain, are unable to accommodate it all at once and abandon their
usual channels. In Soomaa, this exceptionally high level of water is accompanied by
flooding and is called the ‘fifth season’.
